Video game franchises with the best collectibles

Video Games

In the gaming universe, collectibles extend far beyond the digital realm into real life, enabling players to form a tangible connection with their favourite franchises. While most video game series will offer some type of collectible, whether this be in the form of action figures, plush toys, or playing cards, others excel, captivating fans all over the world.

In this article, we take a look at four video game franchises that took their collectibles to the next level, gaining critical acclaim for their efforts.

Super Smash Bros – Amiibo

A crossover fighting game series including the likes of Sonic and Mario, Super Smash Bros is an award-winning franchise that sees players fight to be the last one standing. The most recent game in the series offers Amiibo functionality.

Amiibo’s are interactive and collectible figures created by Nintendo that can be used in various games. When scanned, they unlock in-game content, costumes, items, or in the case of Super Smash Bros, AI-controlled players.

By collecting and scanning these highly detailed figurines, players can train their Amiibo to fight in their style and increase their skill level, making them formidable opponents in battle. With the final Amiibo for Super Smash Bros set to be released next year, every character in the roster will soon have a respective figure.

Pokémon – Pokémon Cards

The Pokémon franchise has been captivating audiences both young and old for more than two decades now, and the popularity of the series doesn’t seem to slowing anytime soon. It’s not just the games that fans go crazy for though.

Those who grew up alongside the franchise will have likely heard of the Pokémon trading card game. In this, players strategically use their decks to battle opponents, employing a range of energy cards, tactics, and abilities to achieve victory.

Pokémon cards are highly sought after by collectors due to their rarity, especially those that are first editions or holographic variants. These cards are still sold to this day and are more popular than ever.

Final Fantasy – Action Figures

The role-playing anthology series that took the world by storm, Final Fantasy has seen 16 games and many spin-offs over the years. From this, we’ve had novels, movies, anime, and collectibles. The most popular type of collectible in the franchise is its line of action figures.

These aren’t just any action figures though; they are highly detailed figurines that are meticulously designed to capture the essence of the characters from the Final Fantasy universe. Lucky fans who are able to get their hands on one can recreate iconic poses and create custom displays. Some even come with additional weapons or accessories for ultimate customisation.

World of Warcraft – Funko Pop! Vinyl figures

World of Warcraft is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, or MMORPG if you will. This allows players to create their own avatar and explore a beautifully constructed open-world game, fighting enemies or completing quests.

You may have heard of Funko Pops before. They are primarily collectible display toys, regarded for their oversized heads and small bodies. In the context of World of Warcraft, Funko Pop! released a series including key characters from the game.

These serve as a way for fans to showcase their love for the MMORPG by placing the figurines on their shelves, desks, or in dedicated collections. Various editions have been released, particularly for events or conventions, making some figures extremely rare.
