Information technology is a broad field. It’s also a very exciting career path, brimming with opportunities for growth. You get to play with the latest advancements in one of the fastest growing fields out there.

Although a career in IT is exciting, it often requires considerable time and effort to get into. You want to be very clear on why you want to pursue an IT career or else your motivation will burn quickly and you’ll give up.

Here are 6 good reasons to dive into the world of IT:

1. IT has the perfect combination of high demand and low supply.

Every company in the world uses technology today, which means there’s a huge demand for IT professionals. IT services that an average company needs includes managing software, creating new IT products, maintaining security, and helping out non-technical folks of the company.

Couple that with a rise in e-commerce business and a boom in remote working and you get an even larger demand for IT services.

Now, you’d think that a service that’s so in demand would have a huge number of people trying to sell it. Luckily, that’s not the case. According to several estimates, there are more IT jobs than people who can fill them. The reason? Lack of qualifications.

This creates the perfect combination of a high demand and low supply for IT professionals. As the COVID-19 pandemic forces the world to adopt technology to an even greater extent, now is the perfect time to get educated in IT.

2. You don’t (really) need college.

Speaking of online courses, the greatest advantage of an IT career is that lack of formal education doesn’t restrict your entry to the field.

Third, you don’t need advanced basic science knowledge for a career in IT. Many people believe you need to be a STEM whiz or the world’s greatest mathematician to get into IT. In fact, you only need basic knowledge of maths to code.

Now keep in mind that not all sub-fields in IT are easy to get into. Some do require formal training but hey, you can always get into the advanced stuff later once you ace the basics via online learning!

3. You can apply your skills to a wide range of roles.

There are over 21 different types of IT jobs. Although this creates the problem of too many choices, it means you’re never going to get bored of IT. Why? Because many fields require more or less the same training, and your skills can be easily transferred from one role to another.

If one day you wake up and decide you’re bored of being a computer programmer, you can simply switch to quality assurance. Or become a web developer, a systems analyst, or a support specialist.

Every app on your smartphone was created to solve a problem, and an IT career will allow you to create similar solutions for countless problems that still exist.

What? You’re not the creative type? You shouldn’t worry because the wide range of IT roles mean there’s something for everyone in it. If you don’t consider yourself the creative type, you can take on roles like troubleshooting technological problems and providing IT support to company staff or customers.

5. IT careers offer a great earning potential.

This is what you were waiting to read, right? While money shouldn’t be the number one reason behind your career choice, it plays a great role in keeping you motivated and allowing you to live a fulfilling life.

Since the supply of even entry-level IT professionals is limited, there’s a good chance that you’ll be paid well by your company compared to other fields. 

An average computer programmer in the US makes $80k a year. Other roles in IT pay even higher, especially when you reach senior positions. Compare that to the $80k that business occupations pay and the $64k that arts and designing fields pay, and you’ll see why IT with all its flexibility and minimal amount of required training is a great option.

6. There’s great potential for remote work.

If there’s one industry that has the greatest potential for online work, it’s IT. Thanks to cloud-based solutions and digital workplaces (and the COVID-19 pandemic), you can enjoy a very flexible IT job if your company allows remote working.

If you’re really into a nomadic lifestyle and don’t want to get stuck in a company for years, you can work as a freelancer. There’s a huge market for freelance IT services, especially on credible and secure freelancing platforms like Fiverr and Upwork. After a simple sign-up process on these platforms, you can bid on thousands of jobs posted daily and kickstart your freelance career.

Companies today are more open to working with freelancers since they’re often a talented group of people and provide high-quality work. Unlike in-house employees, freelancers don’t have to be trained and can work on a per-project basis, which saves a lot of money for companies.

The pandemic has got the whole world actively engaged in online learning to one degree or another.  

Online learning can be challenging for both learners and educators alike, as it demands more attention and self-discipline on the part of the learner than traditional in-person classes.  That being said, the ability to work remotely does provide greater flexibility for learners and educators.

Here are some excellent tips to excel in your academics through an online learning system:  

1. Put an end to distraction 

During online learning, every learner must pay full attention to the teacher. Due to social media and household chores, people may feel less able to concentrate and more inclined to get themselves distracted. This distraction must be confronted directly, which requires active communication with parents and students, to ensure students are working in a quiet environment free from as many distractions as possible. 

2. Effective online communication

Given that in-person interaction is minimal, there should be an established relationship between students and teachers. Communication is a two-way street though, so both parties should work to develop their social presence. 3. Actively participate in class 

More opportunities for active participation and discussion leads to greater levels of student satisfaction and better learning outcomes. Students will experience deeper learning and feel more satisfied by their learning experience.  

When the teacher asks a question or fellow students share content, for example, it can help to have a discussion board where students can post questions and engage with their classmates after the lesson.  This discussion board can be found on the assignment window or stream of Google Classroom or a dedicated space on Padlet could be created, for example.  The idea is simply to get students posting their questions about the assignments they are working on.  Evidence-based learning shows that a peer-to-peer learning environment leads to more profound and memorable learning experiences. 

4. Goal Setting & Schedules 

It is imperative that students have a clear schedule for their studies. This can be simply be a spreadsheet timetable with hyperlinks to all the students’ Zoom lessons, for example.  This helps students to manage their study time to remain more focused. 

5. Avoid tiredness and fatigue

Attending continuous classes via Zoom screen can make anyone feel tired. It is important that both teachers and students take regular breaks away from their screens to avoid “Zoom fatigue”!   Rest and physical exercise form a crucial part of the learning process. 

6. Stay Motivated

The world has changed significantly over the the past year and a half.  Self-isolation, social distancing and mask-wearing has naturally left many people feeling down.  Students can need help to keep themselves motivated, so rewards and praise for excellent progress or for completing assignments can go a long way.

Since the opening of schools is nowhere to be seen in the near future, overseas education is becoming the next big thing for both adults and children. Be it a regular school course or English tuition only, online learning programs are setting a new trend for this world. Online learning from home can present all sorts of new challenges.

Here are some helpful tips for you to make this learning method work well for your children:

Reducing Distractions:

Having a proper learning environment and quiet place is very important, particularly at home. Your child cannot concentrate on studying if they do not have a proper space. Allocating a place your child associates with study will help them to concentrate more. Make sure that your child’s studying place is separate from their bed or a sofa, for example, and not so cosy as to make them fall asleep. A desk and chair will work perfectly for dedicated studying space.

Make a Study Timetable:

Attending online classes is one thing only. Your child cannot grasp all the concepts in an hour or two only. You must make a feasible timetable for your child, which will help them to complete their assignments, find extra resources to fully understand their lessons and whatever is required as per their course requirements.

Pay Attention to their Learning Gadget:

One of the most common mistakes that we all make when it comes to online learning is to think that smartphones are suitable for this purpose. The truth is your child should have a separate gadget for studying and it has to be dedicated solely for this purpose. It can be a tablet, laptop, or desktop, however, please ensure that there aren’t any games or fun apps installed in it, and if there are any, put a lock on them so your child won’t get distracted.

If you cannot manage to get them a separate gadget, turn off all the notifications by using ‘focus mode’ or ‘screen time’. Moreover, make sure that there isn’t any Internet or connectivity issue during their study times. Children can get easily distracted if consistency isn’t there in the learning process.

Pay Attention While They are Studying:

The physical absence of a teacher makes it a bit difficult for some children to remain on track. You need to pay attention to them and should supervise them as much as possible. If you cannot sit with them for hours while they are attending class, you should at least check on them from time to time. They must know that they will be accountable for these online classes.

Keep Them Motivated:

The pandemic has had us all feeling ‘down’. Losing focus and feeling demotivated is very common among children since they are missing out on all the fun they used to have with their friends at school. Keeping them motivated in such a situation should be your priority. This can be done by rewarding them for their good progress and active participation in the online classes. Give them a day off for rest and relaxing, this will prepare them for the coming week and will be refreshing for your children.

Since the crisis of COVID-19 took hold several weeks ago, our teachers have been embracing different learning platforms while honing their skills with innovative ways of teaching digitally.  In addition to Class Dojo, which is mainly used for announcements and communication with parents, and Google Classroom, which is mainly used for delivering assignments to students, teachers have been trialling other, engaging platforms.  

One of these new apps is the screencasting app, Loom.  For those who are not sure, screencasting is where you narrate a video recording of your computer screen – a very handy skill to learn when teaching online!  The advantage of an app like Loom is that it also records a video of the teacher talking, and this appears on the side of the screencast, making the teacher’s explanation much more intuitive to follow.  I have found the app to be particularly effective for the purpose of making ‘Read-Alouds’. 

Here’s a quick example I made for a Read-Aloud of the book, ‘Seeds of Change’:

Loom

The second app we have been using a lot of is the video conference platform, Zoom.  Participants can join a Zoom meeting without having the app installed or needing to sign into the app.  It is only necessary to sign up for an account if you wish to host a video conference.  We have been using this platform mainly for “meet & greet” sessions with students and parents.  After many days in quarantine, this platform can provide a brilliant way for teachers and students to touch base with one another.  Kahoot quizzes complement this platform well and could be used at the beginning of a lesson.  Likewise, Zoom works particularly well at the end of lessons, for example for a Q & A session after students have completed an online task.

As this app involves two-way communication, it’s really important to ensure that everyone is aware of key netiquette rules to follow (that are unique to video conferences) – I explain these netiquette rules for students in the tutorial video below:
