<figure id="attachment_2213" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2213" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="wp-image-2213 size-large" src="https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_3198-1024x764.jpg" alt="Wacom Pen Tablet" width="1024" height="764" srcset="https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_3198-1024x764.jpg 1024w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_3198-300x224.jpg 300w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_3198-330x246.jpg 330w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_3198-690x515.jpg 690w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_3198-1050x784.jpg 1050w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_3198-776x580.jpg 776w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-2213" class="wp-caption-text">The Intuos Wacom pen tablet is a great entry-level tablet to get students started with digital art. Using the pressure-sensitive stylus and the ArtRange Lite software that comes with the tablet, you can create natural looking artwork on the screen.</figcaption></figure>
<p>With the stylus, you simply move your hand and wrist into a natural drawing position.  Using the software,<a href="https://www.artrage.com/artrage-lite/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> ArtRage Lite</a>, which comes free with the Wacom pen tablet, I&#8217;ve been able to blend colours, add effects, and apply retouching effects easily.  This all helps to create digital artwork that looks more natural than could otherwise be achieved using just a mouse.</p>
<p>One of my first attempts using the Wacom tablet was to produce a London cityscape.  I include here a few screenshots of how I went about the process:</p>
<figure id="attachment_2204" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2204" style="width: 892px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-2204 size-full" src="https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.38.png" alt="2016-08-10 at 12.38" width="892" height="482" srcset="https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.38.png 892w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.38-300x162.png 300w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.38-330x178.png 330w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.38-690x372.png 690w" sizes="(max-width: 892px) 100vw, 892px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-2204" class="wp-caption-text">I began using the pencil tool to sketch out the scene.</figcaption></figure>
<figure id="attachment_2205" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2205" style="width: 891px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-2205 size-full" src="https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.39.png" alt="2016-08-10 at 12.39" width="891" height="479" srcset="https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.39.png 891w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.39-300x161.png 300w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.39-330x177.png 330w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.39-690x370.png 690w" sizes="(max-width: 891px) 100vw, 891px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-2205" class="wp-caption-text">Using the watercolour brush and selecting the “unclean brush” preset, I was able to paint a natural looking night sky.</figcaption></figure>
<figure id="attachment_2206" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2206" style="width: 897px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-2206 size-full" src="https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.40.png" alt="2016-08-10 at 12.40" width="897" height="482" srcset="https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.40.png 897w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.40-300x161.png 300w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.40-330x177.png 330w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-12.40-690x370.png 690w" sizes="(max-width: 897px) 100vw, 897px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-2206" class="wp-caption-text">The final result, although not perfect, shows what I was able to do in terms of brush strokes and colour blending using this Wacom pen tablet.</figcaption></figure>
<p>The ArtRange Lite software also includes a &#8216;Tracing&#8217; option in which an image can be uploaded, and by default, this appears transparent, enabling you to trace over the image.  Since students will frequently be drawing portraits as they move through school, I had a go at creating a digital portrait of President Obama:</p>
<figure id="attachment_2208" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2208" style="width: 967px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-2208 size-full" src="https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-13.33.png" alt="2016-08-10 at 13.33" width="967" height="517" srcset="https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-13.33.png 967w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-13.33-300x160.png 300w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-13.33-330x176.png 330w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-13.33-690x368.png 690w" sizes="(max-width: 967px) 100vw, 967px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-2208" class="wp-caption-text">The tracing option on the far right enables you to upload images, which appear transparent in the background. I borrowed this image of Obama from Wikipedia to trace over. The opacity of the image can easily be changed.</figcaption></figure>
<figure id="attachment_2209" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2209" style="width: 994px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-2209 size-full" src="https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-13.35.png" alt="2016-08-10 at 13.35" width="994" height="534" srcset="https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-13.35.png 994w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-13.35-300x161.png 300w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-13.35-330x177.png 330w, https://technologyforlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2016-08-10-at-13.35-690x370.png 690w" sizes="(max-width: 994px) 100vw, 994px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-2209" class="wp-caption-text">Using a range of different brush tools and colour effects, which overlaid the image I was tracing, I was able to create this pop art version of Obama.</figcaption></figure>
<p>Below is a tutorial video, which introduces some of the key tools in ArtRage Lite:</p>
<p><iframe title="ArtRage" width="1290" height="726" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/vOzQGCBuqec?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>I see several advantages of students using a pen tablet alongside a software like ArtRage Lite:</p>
<p>1.   The tool, which emulates the experience of using a pen or paintbrush on paper, creates a direct cross-curricular link with Art.  In doing so, it provides another medium in which to accelerate students&#8217; creativity.</p>
<p>2.  Digital art itself eliminates all the mess associated with students using traditional paints, brushes, etc.</p>
<p>3.  The use of a stylus technology is ideal for helping younger students to develop their fine motor skills.</p>
<p>4.  This tool can provide a range of digital activities in the classroom including drawing, painting, designing 3D models or editing photos.</p>
<p>5.  Pen tablet technology and the skills associated with its use, is increasingly being used in many careers including animation, game development, fashion design, product design, film, photography and graphic design.</p>
<p><strong>Concluding thoughts&#8230; </strong></p>
<p>As well as being easy to use, the process of using the Wacom pen tablet to create digital art is fun!  Education is about far more than academic attainment, and tools like the Wacom pen tablet provide an innovative medium to help foster students&#8217; creativity.</p>
